DESCRIPTION

Gongbi is a realistic style of classic Chinese painting, meaning “tidy or meticulous brush strokes”. It’s characterised by fine, precise, and well-balanced brush technique and bright, vivid colours with rich hues. Traditionally, it is created in ink and pigments on rice paper or silk.

You can see some examples here, here, and here

Previously, we held Gongbi Painting Online Taster Workshop for people who wanted to have a try this style of painting. This time, we're organising a more intensive, 4-day workshop: it's perfect for beginners who want to start their journey with gongbi painting and learn the basics in a relatively short time, but also great for seasoned artists who want to polish their skills and take their artwork to a new level.

In this comprehensive workshop, you will learn the basics of Chinese fine painting and obtain the skills necessary to create your own original artwork.

The first part of the classes focuses on brush line-drawing and layered colouring. In gongbi painting, lines are the foundation - they decide the final quality of the artwork. Then, you will trace master paintings to become familiar with the process of creating precise, fine strokes and vivid colours required to paint in gongbi style.

In the second part, you will create your own beautiful Chinese-style peony painting. Don’t worry, you will be guided step by step by Siyuan, the artist behind The Peony Girl, an experienced and patient teacher, who will provide you with all the necessary help in the process. By the end of the workshop, you will be holding in your own hands a unique piece of art.

Our workshop not only helps you to learn the skill of gongbi painting, but it also provides an opportunity for a calming and meditative experience. Painting in this technique requires focus, care, and attention to detail, which can take your mind away from the usual stress of life.

Together, let’s discover the refinement and peace waiting in the world of gongbi art. Join us at this workshop as a painter to experience it yourself. If you don’t feel quite ready yet to paint with us, you can come on in as a viewer. As a viewer, you can learn something new about the world of art and Chinese culture, while you witness the process of creating an elegant and delicate painting. In the past, we've had people comment that it's a relaxing and therapeutic experience - why not give it a try?

PAINTING MATERIALS

  • Three Brushes: a fine brush for line drawing, two medium brushes for colouring.
