Original Paintings

Fine art paintings created by The Peony Girl. The paintings use pigments and ink on rice paper or silk, oil on canvas or plywood, or a mixed media with all the available materials. They all celebrate the beauty of flowers with a special focus on peony (peonia) to create an aura of English romance and Oriental elegance.

This painting is a continuation of Siyuan’s experiments with mixed media - as the fourth in the series. The earlier paintings are: Melody of Tranquility (sold - see in the gallery), Sunset Rest (available here), and Outside the Vase (sold - see in the gallery).

The purpose was to create an effect of a painting within a painting. In the background, two golden peonies (tree peonies) on the velvety red are the two wall paintings hung closely together. They were created using Chinese Gongbi technique with ink, pigments, and chalk paint and then sealed with wax.

In the foreground, another layer was created in oil paint to achieve the effect of three-dimensional, full blossoms. Those peonies are herbaceous and intersectional peonies and they represent the wonderful memories of the meeting with Billy (Binny Plants) at the Peony Trial at Wisley Garden in 2018. Billy subsequently invited Siyuan to exhibit her fine art at his stand at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2019, where she was honoured to meet Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

Given that this year both RHS Chelsea Flower Show and RHS Wisley Garden Flower Show have had to be cancelled due to Covid-19, Siyuan decided to create this painting of peonies to mark these significant summer events that are sadly missing from the British Summer Social Season.

In the painting, the sun is shining through the French window, bathing an empty armchair in light. Are the peony flowers the wallpaper behind the armchair, or a wonderland outside the window? Is the armchair waiting for you quietly, or you just left it in its wonderland?

This original painting is one of The Peony’s Girl experiments with mixed media. Blue peonies were created with Chinese ink and pigments using gongbi technique, then sealed with wax. The armchair was painted on top in oil paint to create a different texture and a three-dimensional effect.

It was set to capture the circle of life - in the painting, there are flowers in full bloom, flowers wilting, and new buds coming out.

The painting was created with pigments and ink on rice paper, then mounted on silk. It took over 18 hours to finish.

There seems to be no better word than “splendour” to describe this painting.

The inspiration came to The Peony Girl during one of many times when she visited the wonderful properties of the National Trust.
It was a well-known country house and there was a magnificent bouquet of flowers in the oriental room.

It was one of those moments of pure inspiration when the Chinese background and her new home’s Western influence fused together and gave The Peony Girl the idea for this painting.

This piece was an experiment of different media on both silk and canvas. The red and pink flowers were first created with Chinese ink and pigments on silk using gongbi technique. Then, it was mounted onto the canvas and finished off with a touch of oil paint to form a three-dimensional effect.

Rising Above the Silt

Regular price £670.00
/

This painting was created as one of The Peony Girl’s experiments with mixed media. The waterlily was painted with Chinese ink and pigments on silk to emphasise its purity, together with delicate features of the dragonfly. Other elements of the painting were added after mounting the silk onto canvas and painted in oil, to create heavier, crude texture contrasting with the lotus. The whole painting took around 22 hours to finish.

The name "Rising Above the Silt", is a Chinese phrase used to describe a waterlily that grows out of muddy waters - like lilies growing in the marsh - yet untouched by the impurity, clean and beautiful. It implies virtue, purity and high moral values that are not tainted by the unfavourable environment.

This painting has won the major prize of The Yellow Book Project (nationwide) to help support mental wellbeing.

A Peony Bouquet In The Moonlight

Regular price £670.00

A fine art painting showing peonies basking in the glow of the moonlight. There is a slight sentiment of melancholy that can be sensed coming from the painting. One can almost feel the peonies reaching for the last rays of light before the darkness of the late evening falls over them.

This painting is an experiment in mixed media on both silk and canvas. The white flowers in the foreground were created with Chinese ink and pigments on silk. Then, the silk was mounted onto canvas previously painted black. Finally, fragments of silk were burnt to make the canvas visible. The remaining flower elements were developed in oil to form depth. It was one of a series of three in this experiment.
