An intricate and detailed painting of peonies and rabbits in the chinoiserie style. This original artwork has two parts: the background is created with ink and pigments on rice paper, making it light and airy, resembling the vintage chinoiserie wallpapers discovered in those English manor houses; the foreground of the painting is painstakingly oiled onto glass in an impressionistic technique. We love its romantic, elegant feel and think you will too. It’s available unframed only. For framing options, please get in touch with us.

The original mural commissioned by John Lewis & Partners and painted by Siyuan Ren to celebrate the start of the Year of Tiger is now available for sale!

Product description

The impressive mural featuring auspicious symbols: the tiger, peonies, and crane, aiming to bring the wishes of prosperity and abundance in 2022, was painted in chalk paint on nine plywood panels connected together.

In the painting, a majestic tiger is standing among red irises and tree peonies in full bloom. Pinks, reds and whites of the peony blossoms create an effect of fullness and three-dimensional depth and contrast with different shades of blue in the background. Behind the tiger, a pair of elegant cranes are seen taking flight.

The creation process that lasted ten days was witnessed by thousands of visitors in the Highcross Leicester Centre and featured in BBC and ITV News. You can read the full story of the mural here.

We also offer giclée prints of the painting.

Regular price £7,875.00

The two-piece painting started from an idea of a field covered with blossoming peonies - beautiful and soft, inviting for a barefoot walk.

Over time, the painting gradually evolved. First, a window frame was added alongside a vase with fresh herbaceous peonies to create an effect as if someone was living next to a peony field. Then, branch shadows were added to create a dreamy, romantic feeling.

With this painting, one can feel as if they lived next to a stunning peony field which stays full of sweet fragrance and colourful flowers turning towards the sun-filled, cloudless blue sky, regardless of the weather or time of the year!

Media: oil on canvas

The set of three paintings depicts a scene of "Xanadu". Originally inspired by a Classical Chinese poem, “The Peach Blossom Spring”, and the idea of an idyllic, peaceful place. It was created during the pandemic when many struggled with feelings of isolation and needed a place of solace and escape from daily troubles like "Xanadu". You can read the full story of the painting here

"Xanadu" was made in the traditional Chinese gongbi technique, using ink and pigments on rice paper. The process needed much care, focus, and attention to detail, and to obtain the desired depth of colour, over ten layers of ink were used to paint the elements in the painting and the background.

The peony flowers and the birds of heaven were created in the traditional Chinese method, and sealed with wax, on top of which the piano was painted with oil. This brings out the three-dimensional effect.

This painting quietly celebrates the beauty of melancholy.

I am proud to have won the major prize of NHS Leicestershire Trust - The Yellow Book Project to help support mental wellbeing.

The painting was created with Chinese ink and pigments, wax and oil on wood panel over 20 hours

The chrysanthemums were painted with traditional Chinese method, and sealed with wax, on top of which the vase, the table and the clothes were painted in oil. This method helps to bring out the three-dimensional effect.

The vase is empty longing for flowers; but the flowers on the wall live in a different world. They seem so close, but yet so far apart.

Rising Above the Silt - The Peony Girl

Waterlily

Regular price £770.00
/

This painting was created as one of The Peony Girl’s experiments with mixed media. The waterlily was painted with Chinese ink and pigments on silk to emphasise its purity, together with delicate features of the dragonfly. Other elements of the painting were added after mounting the silk onto canvas and painted in oil, to create heavier, crude texture contrasting with the lotus. The whole painting took around 22 hours to finish.

The name "Rising Above the Silt", is a Chinese phrase used to describe a waterlily that grows out of muddy waters - like lilies growing in the marsh - yet untouched by the impurity, clean and beautiful. It implies virtue, purity and high moral values that are not tainted by the unfavourable environment.

This painting has won the major prize of The Yellow Book Project (nationwide) to help support mental wellbeing.

A Peony Bouquet In The Moonlight

Regular price £770.00
/

A fine art painting showing a peony bouquet basking in the glow of the moonlight. There is a slight sentiment of melancholy that can be sensed coming from the painting. One can almost feel the peonies reaching for the last rays of light before the darkness of the late evening falls over them.

This painting is an experiment in mixed media on both silk and canvas. The white flowers in the foreground were created with Chinese ink and pigments on silk. Then, the silk was mounted onto canvas previously painted black. Finally, fragments of silk were burnt to make the canvas visible. The remaining flower elements were developed in oil to form depth. It was one of a series of three in this experiment.

Splendour

Regular price £770.00
/

There seems to be no better word than “splendour” to describe this painting.

The inspiration came to The Peony Girl during one of many times when she visited the wonderful properties of the National Trust.
It was a well-known country house and there was a magnificent bouquet of flowers in the oriental room.

It was one of those moments of pure inspiration when the Chinese background and her new home’s Western influence fused together and gave The Peony Girl the idea for this painting.

This piece was an experiment of different media on both silk and canvas. The red and pink flowers were first created with Chinese ink and pigments on silk using gongbi technique. Then, it was mounted onto the canvas and finished off with a touch of oil paint to form a three-dimensional effect.
