There seems to be no better word than “splendour” to describe this painting.
The inspiration came to The Peony Girl during one of many times when she visited the wonderful properties of the National Trust. It was a well-known country house and there was a magnificent bouquet of flowers in the oriental room.
It was one of those moments of pure inspiration when the Chinese background and her new home’s Western influence fused together and gave The Peony Girl the idea for this painting.
This piece was an experiment of different media on both silk and canvas. The red and pink flowers were first created with Chinese ink and pigments on silk using gongbi technique. Then, it was mounted onto the canvas and finished off with a touch of oil paint to form a three-dimensional effect.
