The original painting was created with Chinese ink and pigments on rice paper and mounted on silk. The painting depicts a pair of butterflies - two lovers who couldn't be together, just like Romeo and Juliet, or as in the famous Chinese story "Butterfly Lovers". After death, they became butterflies and they could finally be unified. Portrayed together with a peony inspired by a Chinese classical poem, the painting symbolizes elegance and the beauty of the lovers' feelings for each other.
